SLARP and Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves is in the SLARP catalog as a Steam game: the app recognizes it by the SoTGame.exe process. The home region and cross-region matchmaking are set by the game itself, and SLARP leaves them alone: it carries session traffic to the server Sea of Thieves chose.

What SLARP does

  • Routes Sea of Thieves through its own network and optimizes ping and jitter

  • Picks the route to the server: the node is chosen for you, or you choose a city

  • If the connection drops, it finds a fallback route

  • Everything else on your PC runs as usual

What SLARP does not do

  • Does not change the region or the server in the game — you pick those in the game itself

  • Does not raise FPS and does not fix stutter caused by load on your PC

  • Will not help when the game's own servers are down

  • Works only on Windows 10 and 11: SLARP does not run on a phone or a console

  • Does not affect cross-region matchmaking: a setting in the game itself turns it on and off

Sea of Thieves servers

Sea of Thieves servers are split into regions, and every player has a home region. Since update 3.4.1 (June 2025) cross-region matchmaking is in place: if the home region has no free server or worthy opponents, the search gradually widens to neighboring regions.2

Rare does not publish a list of server cities; the 3.5.0 release notes name only the new regions: France, South Africa and India.3

Since 3.5.0 you can opt out of cross-region matchmaking in the game settings and wait for a match only in your home region; the change applies from the next search. If at least one crew member has opted out, the whole crew stays in its region. In 3.6.1 the search for players from Australia was widened to Southeast Asia.3,4

How to see your ping in Sea of Thieves

The ping display in Sea of Thieves is turned on in the video settings: since update 3.5.1, on PC you can show ping alone, without the frame counter.5

  1. Open the game settings, the video section: Settings → Video
  2. Turn on the performance counters: ping appears in a corner of the screen. On PC you can keep just the ping, without FPS.5
  3. Watch the number while sailing calmly and in a fort fight: if it is steady but the picture is jerky, the cause is load on your PC, not the network.

Menu items are named as in the source, in English: localized versions of the game translate them.

If Sea of Thieves stutters

Opponents from another region

Cross-region matchmaking can pair you with a crew from a neighboring region, and ping in such a fight is higher than usual. If that bothers you, turn off cross-region matchmaking in the game settings: the search then stays in your home region, even if it takes longer. SLARP has no say in this choice.3

The ship teleports, ping jumps

In the 2.10.2 notes Rare wrote about client and server improvements against ping spikes, desync and rubber-banding. If spikes remain, turn on the ping display and compare Wi-Fi with a cable: steadier on a cable means your home network. SLARP works on the route to the server: it optimizes ping and jitter for the whole session.6,5

Ping is steady, but the game stutters

A steady ping with a jerky picture points to load on your PC, not the network. Turn on the frame counter next to the ping: if that is what dips, SLARP will not help, since it does not raise FPS.

Anti-cheat and SLARP

Sea of Thieves is protected by Easy Anti-Cheat: Rare enabled it in update 2.10.2 in March 2024 and updates it separately from the game. The game's Steam page lists it in the third-party software block.6,1

Game mode does not inject into the game and does not install an intercept driver on its traffic. We cannot vouch for publishers and their anti-cheat: they decide for themselves what counts as a violation.

If the game complains, take it off acceleration (“Don't accelerate (direct)” in the game's menu) and press “Report a problem”.

Questions about Sea of Thieves

How do I turn on the ping display in Sea of Thieves?

In the video settings turn on the performance counters: ping appears in a corner of the screen. Since update 3.5.1, on PC you can show ping alone, without the frame counter.

Can I choose a region in Sea of Thieves?

Rare's notes mention no region picker: every player has a home region, and the only switch is cross-region matchmaking. Turn it off in the settings and the search stays in your home region. SLARP does not change the region.

What if my Sea of Thieves is from the Xbox app or Game Pass?

SLARP tells games apart by process name, not by store. Sea of Thieves is listed in the catalog with the SoTGame.exe process: if your version's process has the same name, the app recognizes it. If the game was not found on its own, add it manually.

Does SLARP work with Sea of Thieves on Xbox?

No: SLARP is an app for Windows 10 and 11 and cannot run on a console. On a Windows PC, yes.

Do I need a card for the trial?

No. The 72 hours are given once per account, with no payment and no card.
